Today we watched the clip for the song Dégénérations by Quebecois band Mes Aïeux.
We did a 5-minute free write and used the rest of class time for the “Maison” project and oral assessments.
We will continue with the maison and oral assessments on Monday.

Today we talked about Halloween in French and worked on the Monster project—
create a monster by cutting body parts from pictures in a magazine and gluing them together or by drawing a monster. Your monster is sick—il est malade. Diagnose 10 symptoms, such as:

Then we wrote captions for story drawings—two per drawing, in French, taking text from story, and told the story in French to a partner. Then we took an oral quiz on the story.

Then we worked on the pink story. We finished translating it and telling it.

Today we talked about –er verb endings. We went over the verbs on the back of the orange/yellow handout, which mean I do… action. We did page 22#7 in the workbook, then discussed –er verb endings with blue handout. This is also covered in the book on page 90.
Devoir (homework): activité de vocabulaire for all words on page 108
Create three columns on a page in your cahier, one for things (nouns), one for verbs (actions), and one for other words. Divide the words on page 108 amongst these columns. Write them in French, then self test yourself by writing them in English.
Due Friday.
Also, quiz Friday on fournitures scolaires, page 86. Know how to write the words in French and whether to use un or une.

Today we learned how to use verbs. We learned the meanings of verbs from chapter 3 from a handout (yellow/orange) and talked about what we like and don’t like to do. Then, we read pages 82-83 in the text and talked about how the verbs are formed when someone is doing them. In the verbs we are talking about, the –er on the end means, “to” and when one person is doing it the ending change to –e, when more than one person is doing it the ending changes to –ent.

Today we reviewed “it,” the thing of a sentence (or direct object), and talked about “lui” and “leur” who receive the thing (or the indirect object). We had two handouts for this.

Today we finished reading Histoire 2 about Pépé le Pu and talked about using the words le, la, les, and l’ as “it” in a sentence. When you don’t want to keep repeating a thing, or the name of the object, you can drop the word and insert it’s article before the verb.
For example:
J’aime la fleur. Je veux la [fleur]. -- > Je la veux. (I want it). La is the flower, expressed as « it ».
Devoir: Handout on these words, called “direct object pronouns.”

Today we did a self quiz to practice plural sentences and a practice listening activity for Thursday’s test.
Then, we worked on reading the “lecture culturelle” on pages 68-69. There is a handout with a map of N America and the Caribbean to guide the reading and two parts to the assignment.

Part 1: première partie
• Read the lecture culturelle on p. 68-69
• For each section, answer the following questions:
– Comment s’appellent-t-ils?
– Ils sont d’où? (put on map)
– Ils sont de quelle origine? (put on map)
– Ils sont de quelle nationalité?
– Ils parlent quelles langues?

Part 2: deuxième partie
• Find 20 places in the US with French names. Put them on the map, label them, then explain what the name means in English.
• You might look for…
– Ville, île, mont, articles (le/la), Saint, colors, or other words you know or recognize
• What can you deduce about the location of these places?

Today we talked about reflexive verbs in the passé composé and used our verbes réfléchis handout. We discussed how agreement (accord) occurs when the thing that the action is directly to is oneself (represented by “se” before the verb), but not if it is a body part that is mentioned after the verb. We did handout exercise page 286 #5 and workbook exercises page R37# 12 & 13.
We then completed our partner sheets and used them to learn the verbs savoir & connaître.
We added these conjugations to the verb chart and used a handout to discuss their meanings.

Devoir (homework): Exercise 14 on page 231 of the savoir/ connaître handout.
Read pages 2-3 in book.

We did some speaking with the dialogue and worked on an activité de vocabulaire for Chapter 2. Instructions follow.

Activite de vocabulaire: Write all the words on page 78 down vertically on a piece of paper that is folded over 1/3. Write the English equivalent under the folded part. Start by self-testing yourself—If you don’t know a word look it up. This is a “word ladder.” You can use the word ladder to test yourself until you know all the words. Devoir (homework): for Monday, finish the word ladder and study etre and the vocab for a quiz next week. Also, read page 58 and complete exercise 12 on page 59 in your textbook. This is practice making sentences plural.

Today we took the verb quiz on irregular –ir verbs and talked about the passé composé.
We got a handout on the passé compose, verbs conjugated with etre and irregular past participles. We started practice with irregular past participles on page R44 of book.

Devoir (homework) pour lundi:
• Look for an internet site in French that is interesting to you. You can find a site about a musician, athlete, sports team/event, news, country, cultural event, animal, etc. Spend about 15 minutes reading as much as you can and going to different links. Print out the home page of the site, then write 75 words in English telling why you picked this site and what you found interesting about the site.
